Goals for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Educators

These introductory materials are designed for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) educators who share the following two goals:
To build an academic or pedagogical? foundation in language teaching.
To improve language teaching classroom practices.

Rationale

English teachers, trainers, and researchers have long recognized the value of not only reading about but actually observing experienced, effective teachers in the classroom as a form of professional development. However, professionally produced multimedia (video-based) English language teacher training materials have been in somewhat short supply. Historically, many of those that do exist have taken a ?talking head? lecture approach and have not necessarily included examples from an EFL context.

Shaping the Way We Teach English: Successful Practices Around the World uses a constructivist, inquiry-based approach, giving viewers opportunities to adapt materials to their local context. It incorporates authentic classroom scenes and interviews with teachers not only in the US but from countries such as Costa Rica, Egypt, and Thailand where EFL is taught as well.

The 15-minute short is the first made by Moonbot Studios, a fledgling animation shop in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Heart of Islam: Enduring Values for Humanity by Seyyed Hossein Nasr

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Nasr's book may have a lot to offer for someone who knows almost nothing about Islam.He tries to give a simple clear-cut picture of Islam to fight off ingrained prejudice which is imprinted on individuals,inculcated in the bosom of some Western societies which are swayed by the mainstream media.But if you are an educated person who actually knows something about Islam, the book does not have much to offer you. What's more if you are a Muslim, the book has nothing to offer. That's why I regret paying for this book. Besides, Nasr supposes that he really knows about every Muslim country as he does not refrain from saying major things about secular Muslim countries like Turkey.In spite of the fact that he clearly mentions " Human imperfection is not the monopoly of any single people,
race, or religious community; it exists everywhere." he compares Islam with Christianity on any occasion he means something like "Well yeah this happened in the history of Islam but it happened less often than in Christianity and Judaism". In every page, he says what Islam orders but he does not actually question the fact that many Muslims do not live properly according to these rules. At his each point, if he does not have anything to say about Christians and Jews, he absolutely has something to say about agnostics and secularists. This writer may be a professor but somebody should clearly define him what secularism actually is. He definitely mistakes it for "atheism". At a point he writes
"The old modernist and liberal schools of thought be-came discredited, as did the modernists as a political class, which had failed to solve any of the major problems that society faced in addition to suffering humiliating defeats, especially in the several Arab-Israeli wars. Nevertheless, modernism continued, often with a new Marxist component, and remained powerful because it controlled and still controls the state apparatus in most Muslim lands. But its intellectual and social power began to wane and weaken nearly everywhere except in Turkey, where Ataturk’s secularism remains strong, held in place by the force of the army.”
I wonder whether this guy has actually ever been to Turkey. Turkey is run by a pro-Islamic political party at this very moment and the leader of this party, Prime Minister Erdogan,who himself is admired by many Arabs as he's been the swash-buckling heroic imagination of an Ottoman Sultan, recently said in Egypt “Do not be wary of secularism. I hope there will be a secular state in Egypt”.It did not take long for him to realize that Arabs were utterly shocked by his remarks so he felt obliged to add “Turkey prefers a model of secularism that is not identical to the “Anglo-Saxon or Western model,”. “Individuals cannot be secular, states are. A devout Muslim can successfully govern a secular state”
Of course he never expatiated upon the Anglo-Saxon or Western model but he now indeed accepts that he was mistaken in the past. Husein Nasry may be a college professor but the education he has had seems to be not enough to make him understand that secularism is the only way to create a democratic society where one religion does not have domination over the other so that different religious groups can live peacefully. I don’t think the modern world (in which there are lots of nation states) has an answer better than this one.
It may be just a reflection of how important Turkey is now regarded in the world, because of its strategically placed position in the east, we feel many Westerners and as well as many Muslims who are bound to live under the jackpot of tinpot dictators Turkey is the best model for Islamic countries and this model was created by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Unfortunately Nasr belittles and insults his legacy as he writes
"“From the ranks of the modernists rose nationalists and liberal think-ers, men who sought to modernize Islamic society, on the one hand, and fight against the West in the name of national independence, on the other. The colonial wars fought against Western powers for national independence by such figures as Ataturk, Sukarno, Bourgiba, and others The Spectrum of Islam 103 were carried out in the name of nationalism, not Islam. Consequently, when Western powers left their colonies, at least outwardly, in many areas they left behind them ruling groups who were Muslim in name, but whose thinking was more like that of the colonizers they had replaced.”
The great leader Ataturk was a source of inspiration in the fight against imperialistic powers. To regard him as the same as a colonizer?! What can I say about this? Nothing!
Nasr mentions secularism so many times that you sometimes ask yourself whether he is obsessed with denigrating it. In another page he writes "...Consequently the welfare of the poor is left to a large extent to the mercy of private individuals and institutions, all motivated, not by
some kind of secularist altruism, but by the Islamic emphasis upon the importance of compassion, charity, kindness,and mercy to those less fortunate who turn to those better off for help."
Piety can be a reason for a lot of people to help out others in need but does anybody have to be religious to be just good and altruistic? Can't an atheist or a secular person do something good? We do know there are lots of volunteers who work for humanitarian purposes not because they are dreaming of their place in paradise but they hope for a better future for the humanity in this fleeting world! What's more Nasr supposes that every secular person/ agnostic believes in evolutionary theory as he writes "...ten those same champions of humanity believe that hu-man beings are nothing more than evolved apes, who in turn evolved from lower life forms and ultimately from var-ious compounds of molecules..." Not everybody who believes in some sort of evolution is a Godless person, while not every atheist has to believe in evolution...Nasr writes "Anything less than mutual respect in understanding the other side makes a sham of the question..." I wish he could actually stick to this in the whole of his book and he had not done so many pointless comparisons and he had not reflected his opinions as clear-cut formulas.

"Bu Son Olsun" (literally "Let this be the Last One") named after apolitically motivated popular Turkish song is the latest dramedy aboutThe 12 September 1980 Turkish coup d'état. Since early 1990s manyTurkish movies, TV series, and theater plays have tried to severelyreprimand the military power of the period for preparing ground for themilitary action by allowing the armed conflicts betweenleftist/rightist groups to escalate, torturing and hanging many youngsocialists under the pretext of restoring order and making peoplebelieve in a new constitution while the democracy was in its deaththroes. While some of these movies, especially the ones that were madein early 2000s have been somewhat successful after a fashion, none ofthem actually put the coup at its heart and actually none of them hashad any comedy in it. Orçun Benli's directorial debut is somehowdifferent in this sense. Born to a soldier father in 1980, Orçun Benlisays he actually became cognizant of the inner dynamics of the periodwhen he took interest in politics in mid 90s. His movie may be just asimple effort to shed some light on the period but he surely has hadsome scores to settle. He simply tells the story from the point of viewof a bunch of homeless guys whose only aim is to add some color to theminutiae of their quotidian existence by drinking wine. Ironically,they are highly apolitical in a period when the whole politicalWeltanschauung is bringing a society to its knees and denuding it ofits humanitarian touch. At first glance, the director Mr. Benli seemsto be aloof and detached from the political ambiance as he is nottrying to take any sides but when this unlikely quintet ends up inprison among political convicts, he does show his color and startcaricaturizing the characters. The prison director depicted as aburlesque of monolithic civilian bureaucracy, the infirmary doctorsatirized as a travesty of medical conscience, the ridiculedultra-nationalist Grey Wolves are deliberately used to achieve agrotesque comedy effect but did they really succeed in doing so? Idon't think so. As soon as the homeless apolitical fellows end up inprison, the screwball comedy takes a sharp unconvincing turn towardsdark comedy. In addition to this, the director expedites the dénouementof the movie and leaves a serious plot hole.( The prison director wantsthe quintet to act his mole in the ward. We do not see whether they doaccept this or what they are going to help out the director. In theironly effort to help out the director, we seem them helping out all theprisoners to escape in an unreal oneiric escape. To cap it all, thedrama loses all its realistic effect when we see the prisoners lookingall dandy and fine who were actually beaten up a short time ago. "BuSon Olsun" may look like a promising debut but it is likely to be a atthe box-office failure and I'm afraid Orçun Benli may end up among morethan 30 Turkish directors who have not had the chance to make theirsecond movie after their promising debuts in recent years.

Just because you made a supposedly bold movie does not mean you are actually bold. The fact that you disliked a movie about homosexuality does not make you homophobic either, 15 January 2012

Inspired by the true story of Ahmet YILDIZ, who was murdered for beinggay at the age 26 by his own father in 2008, Zenne, which picked upfive at the latest Golden Orange Film Festival, is claimed to be a boldfilm because it tells the story of "an unlikely trio" who are Can(Kerem CAN)an exuberant,confident and stylish male dancer, Ahmet, auniversity student who was born to a South-Eastern Kurdish parents andDaniel, a German photographer who has recently taken up orientalismafter his troubled stint in Afghanistan. As a cinema-goer I have alwaysapproached Turkish award-winners with caution. Whenever a bold, minimalmovie with scanty dialog and a bold subtext is made, it seems to getawards. I have been disillusioned with award-winners so many times thatI hesitated to go to this movie for a moment. Let me tell you thatZenne is not a bold movie at all. When I saw the trailer I thought Iwould see a shocking movie which really tells you a story about what agay must be going through every day.Instead, I saw a watered downversion of a non-credible story which looks merely forced. In thebeginning of the movie we see the characters Can and Ahmet fighting.Before you actually realize the two are friends you see a Germanphotographer blending with them.Without much of a background, Danieland Ahmet falls in love and yes you need wide eyes to actually knowthat they are gay. Despite the accolades bestowed upon the movie,whenever the viewer feels the movie is losing the whole effect, themakers of this movie just try to save themselves by showing somevisually bold male dancing sequences. The acting does not save iteither. The parents of Ahmet look no more than histrionic and overlytheatrical. Even if the mother of Can(Tilbe Saran) looks credible as aforlorn mother the subtext of the movie-putting all the blame ofhomophobia on mothers (families) is sheer blasphemy. A cross-dressinggay's life is not supposed to be easier just because he's got a moreunderstanding, more liberal mother just as it's not supposed to beeasier if he's living in Germany. Gay-bashing still takes place in manyparts of the world including Germany. You can Google multiplereferences to a 1999 study that placed suicide attempts amonghomosexuals at 18 percent - four times the rate of heterosexual youthsin Germany. According to an article published on the Economist magazineand referenced in the official website of the movie Mehmet Binay, whoco-directed "Zenne", says he was astonished that Zenne was allowed tocompete, let alone to win the award for best first film. Zenne takes itfor granted that homosexuality is an inborn, unchangeable part of somepeople and claims to show that those people suffer from that the factthat some heterosexual people believe that homosexuality is a choicebut it does not really succeed in convincing you about that.Fake,one-dimensional and weak characters, wooden and absurdly stagyacting, visually stunning dancing sequences on it own whichholistically look disjointed and disconnected, an unlikely friendshipwhich actually looks expeditedly told and non-credible,easilynoticeable goofs ( as in Ahmet's photo shoot for the military while heis all hirsute but his efforts to epilate his body hair to make himselfmore credible as a gay for the military medical check) turn this movieinto a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists.

Usta tells the story of Doğan (Yetkin Dikinciler), a small-time carmechanic who has been dreaming of building a single-engine biplane.Doğan does not care about how many planes have been produced until thenor whether his design will actually make a different for the worldaeronautics world. All he wants do is to show the whole world that hecan actually design a local single-engine plane and make it work.AsDoğan has been working on that plane in his backyard for so long, hiswife Emine (Fadik Sevin Atasoy) does not really share his enthusiasm.Emine has had a few miscarriages but she still wants to have a baby ofher own in spite of the risk. When Doğan realizes that there areactually some people who do not believe that Dogan would achieve hisdream, he decides to fly his not properly finished biplane in the localaeronautics fair but his plane crashes and what's worse his wife feelsneglected and leaves Doğan at a moral crossroads. Torn between hismarriage and his dream, what should Doğan do? Stop chasing his dream orsave his falling apart marriage? Doğan's dilemma may sound too simplebut it is actually the story of lots of Turkish people which goesuntold. Unfortunately, Turkish people are educated in a general systemwhere creativity and lateral thinking are mostly suppressed. Studentswho study in state-owned schools are,without exception, needs thesupport of a course system called "dershane", a system which isactually the Turkish counterpart of cram schools. Students, typicallyat week-ends (in some instances, also after the school hours, ), aredrilled on diverse aspects of a student selection exam. Let alone highschools, even the best colleges and universities accept students basedon an academic test administered at the end of a student's education.-Atest in which students are obliged to choose one out of four-fiveoptions. Even the most successful students are actually the bestchoosers because they just achieve the result without producinganything tangible. What I mean is that many Turkish people like Doganare indeed encouraged to save himself a wild goose chase as theprofessor says to Dogan "A power glider is no big deal. It does notmatter we did not invent them. We assemble them right here.Theobjective is to fly. Can you compete with that?". For the founder ofthis modern republic, Mustafa Kemal, the fight to compete with thatwould be the real struggle from sparring to actual fight but for thepresent day Turkey you need to stop chasing your dreams and realize"capital isn't enough,you've got to have contacts,associates, andcommunity" So kudos to Karataş and his team for this masterfulre-examination of today's Turkey. As for the cast,acting andcinematography. The harmony between the old actors and the young onesblend it perfectly with the warm atmosphere of the movie. The chemistrybetween Atasoy and Dikinciler as husband and wife is laudable. Thenorthwestern city Eskişehir, on the other hand, pleases the eyes withPorsuk River overlooking the fertile Phrygian Valley,with its finearchitecture and aviation parks. The only that bored me in this moviewas the technique of sequence shots because the movie just makes youfeel that it's dragging at some points and when you realize that theruntime is no longer than two hours, you are just surprised, but I readthat Bahadar Karataş used this technique so that the players would beallowed greater allowed. All in all, Usta is one of the best recentTurkish movies. It should have gotten a better box-office rating and itsurely deserves more attention,especially from the local cinéastes.

Set in Dalyan, Muğla, "Brought by the Sea" tells the story of an ex-coptrying to come to terms with his conscious remorse as he fights for anillegal immigrant child. Halil (Onur Saylak)ex-cop who accidentallykills an African immigrant and withdraws to his hometown to refresh hismind. As she spends some time on the sea-side one day, he happens tosee this basket ball. As it turns out later, the ball belongs to anillegal immigrant child (Jordan Deniz Boyner),Jordan. Halil just wantsto get the ball to his owner at first, He drops by the hospital toleave the ball. When he asks the nurse on duty to give the ball to itsowner, the nurse Yaren (Ahu Türkpençe) suggests he give the ballhimself by making an unkind insinuation about his troubled past.

The premise of this movie has had great potential actually. The borderbetween Turkey and Greece has been the main conduit for humantrafficking since border controls with Spain, Italy and Malta wereintroduced in the Mediterranean Sea. Though some Greek and EU officialsclaim that say refugees from the informal visa-free zone developing inthe East, around Turkey are taking advantage of a cheap, safeexpressway to Europe's borderless Schengen area, of which Greece ismember, a refugee's fight is actually not that easy. Those officials donot mention the fact that not every boat has a chance to be properlyintercepted. Some of those heavily crowded boats capsize in the middleof the sea. Most of those boats have a space accessible only through atrap door which causes refugees die of asphyxiation. Even if they reachtheir destination safe and sound, they will probably be welcomed byfilthy, stuffy breathless gym saloons. Unfortunately, Brought by theSea does not really succeed in telling you all that. The acting is sobad; the emotional harmony amongst the actors is so wooden that youjust don't feel for the plight of refugees. Boat scenes at seacinematographically look so poor that it just sounds like a mise enscene provided for a theatre play. It is also known fact English is notspoken commonly in Turkey. That the movie is shot in a sea-side towndoes not change that fact. Halil (subtled, nuanced Yusuf of "Sonbahar"turned into an easily forgettable, petty character), an ex-cop speaksEnglish fluently enough but he does not remember the word "elephant"and make himself understood by pantomime. There should have been abetter way to make English "credible". I am not an expert linguist butAfrican players do not really sound like Africans. It may have beendifficult to find enough native Africans but Jordan Deniz Boyner doesnot really fit that role.

So many cineastes have already clamored "Let's just assume that thismovie has never been made and Colgecen stays in our memory with his'Selamsiz's Band' and 'The Broken Landlord'. I would most probablyagree with them if I saw both movies.

Bundan 3-4 yıl önce Diyarbakır’da gezerken “Kelepir Kitabevi” diye bir yer dikkatimi çekmişti. Kitaplara bir bakayım diyerek içeri girdim.Bir rafta yeniden ciltlenmiş bakımdan geçmiş eski kitaplar dikkatimi çekti. Ne kadar bunlar?” diye sordum. Görevli bayan da “İnceler 5 kalınlar 7” deyince içimden “Tam da bize has bir cevap oldu. Kitabın kalınlığından ölçen başka bir kültür var mıdır acaba diye kendi kendime sormadan edemedim. Neyse o vakit 5-6 kitap almıştım. Onlardan bir tanesi Soljenitsin’in ‘İvan Denisoviç’in Hayatında Bir Gün’ adlı kitabı idi. Cem Yayınları’ndan İstanbul 1987 basım bir kitap…Bu kadar kıymetli kitapların yeniden baskısı neden zamanında yapılmaz, baskısı tükenince yeniden basılması için yıllarca neden beklenir, hatta bazen yeniden hiç basılmaz bilmem ama bir gerçek var ki Türkiye’de çeviriye özen göstermeyen ve hatta çeviriyi kendi dünya görüşüne göre uyarlamaya kalkan (Pinokyo’ya Allah dedirten zihniyetin ta kendisi) bir kesim var ve bunlara ait yayınevleri mantar gibi çoğaldı ve “MEB TAVSİYELİ 100 ESER” damgasını kolayca kitabın köşesine kondurup ve 2-3 liraya klasik eser satılabileceğini ince okur olmayan halkın zihnine yerleştirdi maalesef. Her neyse ben İvan Denisoviç’i okuduğumdan beri Soljenitsin’in diğer kitaplarını da okumak istiyordum.Ancak Soljenitsin’in kitaplarını ara ki bulasınız. 1971’de 13 Numaralı Koğuş Kanserliler Pavyonu diye basılan bu kitabı bulabileceğiniz tek yer nadirkitap.com’da yer alan birkaç sahaf.

Ben İngilizcesini bir arkadaşın yardımıyla bulduğum için ve bu kitabı okuduğum için kendimi şanslı hissedenlerdenim doğrusu. Cancer Ward birgün oturup yeniden okurum dediğim ender kitaplardan. Yarı otobiyografik izler taşıyan kitap sosyal statü farklılıklarına rağmen aynı koğuşu paylaşmak zorunda kalan bir grup kanserlinin hikâyesi. Bu karakterler arasında ise boynundaki bir tümörden mustarip komünist parti lideri Rusanov ve orduda geçirdiği 7 yılın ardından 7 yılını da sürgünde geçiren Oleg Kostoglotov’un oluşturduğu tezat kitabı sürükleyen ana unsur. Kendisi sürgünde mide kanseri olan yazar hayat verdiği Oleg’de aslında bir nebze kendini anlatıyor ve daha iyi şeyler vaat eden komünizmin aslında sayısız insanın hayatını- tıpkı fark gözetmeden eline geçirdiği her hayatı örseleyen kanser gibi nasıl da parçaladığını çarpıcı bir şekilde gözler önüne seriyor.

"YouTube and BBC iPlayer videos are actually digital video files, so generally it's better to download them rather than capture them. With YouTube videos, the whole file is usually held in the browser's cache folder – Temporary Internet Files, in the case of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. You can copy the file out of there and rename it, but the folder is hidden and you would have to ignore Windows' security warnings. However, it's probably better to use a download site such as Keepvid.com. This allows you to download a higher-resolution MP4 movie rather than the Adobe Flash video (flv) usually used for streaming. There are lots of YouTube downloaders, and most online options require you to run a Java applet.
These websites are not restricted to YouTube videos. For example, Keepvid can also download videos from Facebook, Google Video, Vimeo, Metacafe, Dailymotion, TED and other sites.

With a "live stream" such as a webcast, there is no file to download, just a continuous stream of bits. When they arrive, these bits are written to a (hidden) buffer area on the PC's hard drive, to smooth out variations in the internet's speed. The trick is to save the streamed data as a file, using a program such as StreamTransport or Streambox VCR. Videohelp has a list of stream recorders that you can try.

I myself tested most of the stream captures and I think the best one (coz it's free and easy to use) is StreamTransport. You can download it on http://www.streamtransport.com/

The pool is located in the village of Eflatun 22 kilometres north of Beyşehir.The Hittites built most of their rock monuments by water sources.During excavations in front of the monument in 1996,led by Museum of Konya, a rectangular pond measuring measuring 30 by 35 metres was discovered with five reliefs in the lower part.Since 1837 the monument had been known to be 3,5 meters tall,but now, with the lower part uncovered, it stands at 7 metres.This sacred pool was an important religious centre of the Hittites-People with a thousand Gods-after the holy temple of Yazılıkaya in Boğazkale.The sacred relief of Eflatunpınar consists of 19 rectangular stone blocks built next to the village water source.On seventeen of those blocks there are reliefs of gods and demons.A god and goddess are portrayed on the two upright blocks in the middle.lightbox.com/aE8hNsf

Orhan Kemal'in 72. Koğuş'u ikinci kez beyazperdeye aktarılınca elimize alıp bir okuyalım Orhan Kemal'i dedim. Dünya yazınına damgasını vurmuş birçok kitabı okumama rağmen. Türk klasiklerine bir türlü el atamadım. Ne yalan söyleyeyim belki ta ortaokul yıllarından başlayarak, dünya edebiyatından metinlerin üzerinde pek durmayan edebiyat öğretmenleri, lisede Farsça ve Arapça kelimelere boğulmuş metinlerle kafayı bozmuşçasına ilgilenen hocalar yüzünden klasik Türk edebiyatı ile aram hiçbir zaman iyi olmadı. Artık klasik diye nitelendirilebilecek Orhan Kemal işe benim için hakikaten iyi okur deneyimi oldu. Bir okur ve bir Türkçe sever ve kendi çapında bir sözlük koleksiyoncusu olarak en çok şikâyet ettiğim konu Türkçe’nin ağız zenginliklerinin doğru düzgün kayıt altına alınamamış olması. TDK’nın so birkaç yıldır üzerinde çalıştığı Büyük Türkçe Sözlük birçok sözcüğü kayıt altına almış olsa da yöresel ağızlarda hala yaşayan birçok sözcük ve deyimsel ifade hala kayıt altına alınamamış durumda aslında. Yeni nesil ‘şehirli’ oldukça gençlerimiz, çocuklarımız dedelerinin, annelerinin kullandığı ifadeleri anlamaz, kullanmaz hale geldi maalesef. Mesela bizim köyde kimse havlu demez, insanlar hala Farsça kökenli ‘peşkir’ sözcüğünü kullanırlar. Acele yapılan bir eylemin gereksizliğini ifade etmek için ‘Arpa ekip de götüne bakan gibi’ ifadesi hala yaygındır. Orhan Kemal’in yazdıkları bu anlamda değerli… Zira karakterleri çoğu zaman Adana ağzıyla konuşuyor. Yazar ilginç ifadelerini de eksik etmiyor. Misal 72. Koğuş ‘da mahpushanedeki mahkumların doğasını tanımlamak için “bunlar Allah’ın cebinden peygamberi çalarlar” ya da “yaralı parmağa bile kimsenin karşılıksız işemeyeceği bir dünyada” gibi cuk oturan ifadeler var. 1950’lerde yazılan bu eserlerde ise okuru öyle boğacak kadar Osmanlıca kelime olmaması ise her yaştan Türk okuruna hitap etmesini sağlıyor bu kitapların. “Küçük Adamın Romanı” serisinin, “Baba Evi”, “Avare Yıllar”, “Cemile”, “Dünya Evi” ve “Arkadaş Islıkları” romanlarını içerdiği söyleniyor. Ben seriden üç kitabı okudum. Birbiri ardı sıra okumak şart değil, lakin Baba Evi, Avare Yıllar ve Cemile sırasıyla okunursa okura daha keyif verecektir. Serinin ilk kitabında kahramanımızın Kurtuluş Savaşı'na gönüllü olarak katılmış olan hukukçu babası savaştan sonra iktidar karşıtı olarak dikkatleri çekince kalabalık ailesiyle birlikte Beyrut'a kaçmak zorunda kalmıştır. Yazar bu ‘Küçük Adamı’ Adana kahvelerinden birinde tanıdığını söyleyip bir başkası anlatır gibi yapsa da aslında kendi hayatından kesitler sunuyor. Yazar da kahramanımız gibi babasının partisinin kapatılması üzerine Beyrut’a göç etmek zorunda kalmış ve orta son sınıfta eğitimini yarıda bırakmış mesela. Kahramanımız Beyrut’ta onca sıkıntı çekip en sonunda dayanamayıp babasını razı edip Adana’ya dönünceye kadar kitabı soluksuz okudum diyebilirim. Romanda Konya mevzubahis olduğunda bir sayfada yazarın Delibaş ayaklanmasını özetlemesini ilgi çekici buldum ama yazarın ‘öteki tarafa geçmiş’ babasının siyasal düşünceleriyle hiç ilgilemiyormuş gibi görünmesi, tanıştığı Giritli, Ermeni ya da Boşnak insanların sorularına “bilmem” diye yanıt vermesi sanırım Orhan Kemal’in hapis yatmış biri olarak eserlerinin yayınlanmayacağından endişe etmesiydi ki tam iktibas edemeyeceğim ama kitap da bir kısımda da bunu dile getiriyor Hâlbuki Soljenitsin’leri, Ribakovları bugün muazzam yapan gerçek onların bir zamanlar yasaklı yazarlar olmasıydı. Belki de Nazım Hikmet,Maksim Gorki okudu diye onu komünist belleyip Orhan Kemal’i hapse atanlara, komünizmi yıkacak diye onu muhalif belleyip Ribakov’u sürgüne gönderen komünistler arasında bir fark yoktu ve herkes kendi derdindeydi.

Avare Yıllar, Baba Evi’nin devamı olarak kahramanımızın Adana’ya döndükten sonra okulda dikiş tutturamaması ve birkaç iş deneyip hiçbirini beceremeyince bir fabrikada katipliğe başlamasını anlatıyor. O vakit Cemile’yi anımsatmaya başlayan eseri bitirdikten sonra (yazar isim vermese de) ‘madem Kâtip almış işçi kızını evlenmiş. Cemile’yi neden yazmış o halde Orhan Kemal? dedirtiyor insana doğrusu.

Toplumcu-gerçekçi Orhan Kemal’in garip insanların koşullara direnememesi acı gerçeğini 72. Koğuş ’da anlatışını etkileyici bulsam da Avare Yıllar’da kahramanımızın, fakir ailesinin desteğine rağmen eğitimini yarıda bırakması bana çaresizlikten çok keyfiyet gibi gelsi doğrusu. Sonradan İzzet Usta’nın etkisiyle bol bol okumaya başlayan kahramanımızın İki Çocuğun Devrialemi’nden başka bir kitap ismi vermemesine de hayıflandım doğrusu. Orhan Kemal sözünü ettiğim üç kitabı birleştirip bir uzun roman yazmış olsaydı belki daha bütüncül, ucu daha az açık bir eser olurdu.

Yine de bu kitapların İngilizce ’ye çevrilmiş olması oldukça manidar doğrusu.

Sözünü ettiğim kısım

"Birdenbire bir isyan içinde bulduk kendimizi, yahut da bana öyle geldi. Keçe külâhlı, poturlu insanlar, yerlere kaba kaba basarak koşuşuyorlar, ‘İstemezük, biz bu hükümeti istemezük!’ diye bağrışıyorlardı. Soran olursa, kömürcünün oğlu olduğumu söylememi sıkı sıkı tembih etmişlerdi. Babaannem, babama ait ne kadar kitap, kağıt, fotoğraf, kılıç, tüfek varsa, daha doğrusu Ankara'daki babama ait ne varsa hepsini yatakların pamukları içine, tavan arasına saklamıştı. Alaettin tepesinden atılan kurşunların bizim evin üst kat pencere camlarını kırıp Ermeni mektebine, Ermeni mektebinden atılan kurşunların da gene aynı şekilde, bizim evin üst kat pencerelerinden geçip, Alaettin tepesine gittiğini söylüyorlardı. Mektebin pencerelerinde kaba bıyıklı başlar görüyorduk ve bütün gün, bütün gece alt katın merdiven basamaklarında barınıyorduk. Bir gün işittik ki, asiler, valiyi ahıra bağlamışlar. ‘Şeriat isterük, biz bu gavur hükümeti istemezük, dinsizleri istemezük, şeriat isterük!’ diye sürüklenen çığlıkları ve dinmek bilmeyen silâh sesleri duyduk. Kapılar kırılıyor, insanlar boğazlanıyordu.

Günler ve günler geçti... ‘İstemezük, istemezük, istemezük!’ sesleri sokaklarda çınladı durdu ve bir gün çığlık, silâh sesi, istemezüklerle yüklü, hava içinde ‘Kuvây-ı Milliye geliyormuş’ haberi şimşek gibi çaktı. İstemezükler dindi, kaba postallı ayaklar sokaklarda kaçıştılar, silah sesleri kesildi. Güneşli bir sabah, ellerimizde mendiller evin önündeki ahalinin arasına kardeşimle ben de karıştık. Ağızları köpüklü, kuvvetli atların nal sesleri her şeyi örttü. Çılgın bir alkış... İhtiyar kadınlar, çocuklar, genç kadınlar, kızlar sevinçten ağlıyorlar, kalabalık neşe çığlıklarıyla çalkalanıyordu. Atlılar geçiyordu, atlılar... Parlak güneşin altında, kabalakları, kalpakları, koça koça bıyıkları ile atlılar geçiyordu. Sonra îstemezük'ler... Elleri arkalarında bağlı, poturlu, keçe külâhlı, şeriat fedaileri... Derken yük arabaları... Yük arabalarında, enselerinden kesilmiş, kanlı cesetler... O gün o kadar bağırdım ki, sesim kısıldı, hastalandım. Ermeni mektebinin önünde çocuklar, fişek kovanlarıyla bir çeşit mortiz oynamağa başladılar. Sokaklar boş fişek kovanlarıyla doluydu..."

Bu kitabı Seyfi Teoman gibi ilk filmi Tatil Kitabıfilmiyle bana oldukça umut veren ve Avrupa Film Akademisi Keşif Ödülü'ne adayolan bir yönetmen beyazperdeye aktarmasa herhalde okumazdım. Ancak 61. BerlinFilm Festivali'nde yarışan filmi izlemeden önce kitabı okumam lazımdı. Hemkitabın arka kapağında "nefes alır gibi, su içer gibi" yazan bu çağaözgü laf kalabalığından uzak duran bir yazardan söz ediyordu. Doğrusu BarışBıçakçı'dan okuduğum ilk ve tek kitap bu henüz. Üslubu hakkındahissettiklerimin tam olarak kitabı arkasında yazan şeylere koşut nitelikteolduğunu söyleyemem. İlk 20 sayfayı geçtikten sonra "yahu ne anlatıyor buadam?" dedim kendime kendime. Daha sonra anlattığı şey bana Türksinemasının son dönemde anlattığı hikâyelere benzer göründü. Aşk TesadüfleriSever, Başka Dilde Aşk, Kaybedenler Kulübü ya da Issız Adam gibi filmlerderastladığınız hikâyelere benzeyen bir hikâye bu. Karakterlerimiz Ender ve Çetinçocukluktan beri birbirlerine tuhaf derecede bağlı olan iki arkadaş. Tuhafderken şöyle izah edeyim. Arkadaşınız üzülür diye kızarkadaşınızla beraberkaldığınız odada bir yatak serip arkadaşınız aynı odaya yuması için davet edenbir sadakat ve sevgi bağını düşünün. Öyle bir arkadaşlık işte… Kulağa sıra dışıgeliyor değil mi? Ama karakterlerimizin yaşam tarzı öyle pek de sıra dışı değilaslında. Onlar kavramlarla düşünüp ayıp, suç, günah gibi şeylerin esaretialtında yaşamak yerine kavramları olan, hayatı en üst imkânlarına genişletmearaçların farkında olan, bu dünyada sevişmek diye bir şey olduğunu, kolaycacıkda sevişen kadınlar olduğunu bilmenin heyecanını taşıyan ve bunu da sonunakadar kullanan 40'larına merdiven dayamış iki erkek… Bu iki erkek konuştuğuşeylerle, o yaşa kadar gelirken düzdüğü sayısız kadınla ve yaşadıkları hayatlasöz ettiğim filmlerdeki karakterlere o kadar benziyor ki... Bilmiyorum ne zamananlayacağız? 1 Mayıs'ta yürüyen, emekçinin yanında olduğunu hisseden, uzunsaçlı filan olan her erkek aşık oluncaya kadar gördüğü her kadını düzmez ya daaşık olduğunu hissettiği kadına verdiği değer onu kısa bir süre sonra yatağaatacak kadar değildir. İster 'taassup ‘deyin adına ister 'değerlerimizikorumak' deyin buna ama biz oturduğumuz her sohbet masasında bira her yemeksofrasında rakı içen insanlar değiliz. Evet, belki genelevlerde bekâretininasıl kaybettiğini övgüyle anlatacak kadar sığ erkeklerimiz vardır ama bağnazolmayan, açık fikirli olan, çok da dindar olmayan her erkeğimiz gerçek aşkıhissedinceye kadar düzüşmez. Ya da ne bileyim her birimiz çocukluk aşkımızıyıllar sonra bulduktan sonra ona verdiğimiz onu için vazgeçilmez olan hediyekutusunu ona verdikten sonra 360 derecelik bir açıyla kendini yatakta bulmaz.Bazı değerlerimiz varsa bunu " yaşadıklarıyla kalmak" diyetanımlamak, yasakları, suçları, günahları olmamayı ise hayatı en üstimkânlarına kadar genişletmenin araçları gibi hissetmek ve bunu da [geleneksel]değerleri olan bir insanın yapamayacağı imasını sevmedim ben... Çetin ve Enderdurumunda olan herkes Nihal'e âşık olabilirdi, tabi bu olasılık bu hikâyeyidaha az insani yapmazdı lakin Bıçakçı’nın birine anlatmak için yazılmış gibigörünse de kendi kendine konuşur gibi duran üslubunu sevemedim açıkçası kihikâyesindeki ön kabuller de cabası… Yine de filmi (ki kitap kadar derin olmasada film, iki ana karakteri kitaptakinden çok daha düzgün olarak sunuyor onusöyleyeyim.) İzlemeyi düşünenlere kitabı kesinlikle okumalarını öneririm.

A movie for those who have read the book...Even those who have read the book will feel something is just missing..., 1 September 2011
What actually prompted me to see this movie was the fact that it wasdirected by a director like Seyfi Teoman who was nominated for EuropeanDiscovery of the Year in 2008 with his movie 'Summer Book', which wasindeed a promising debut, and the fact that Our Grand Despair wasselected to be in competition at the 61st Berlin International FilmFestival but I rarely watch an adaptation without reading the bookfirst. Ender (İlker Aksum) and Cetin ( Faith Al)are in their latethirties. They are childhood friends and they share the same flat,which is something they have been dreaming about for years. Both ofthem have apparently failed in their pursuit for love. For that matter,the two guys did not go beyond the realms of sexuality in their pursuitthough it was not openly mentioned in the movie. Their hardcohabitation is disrupted by Nihal, the sister of their close friendFikret (Baki Davrak)who happen to lose both of their parents in atraffic accident and we set out to watch two friends torn betweensocial responsibility and following their heart. I'm not necessarilyone of the fans of the book.I can say I did not just like BarışBıçakçı's style which has been claimed to be devoid of any modernlogorrhoea and unclarity.The book was written as if it were a letter byEnder to Çetin to give an account of what they went through together.Itsounded as if the writer were just talking to himself or just relivingthe moment again in his mind.That's why,I believe, some scenes mighthave sounded so blank for someone who has never read the book. It mayhave looked irrelevant, redundant and tedious. Some say, they couldhave used voice-overs with music to cover that void. Because, there isno voice-over and there is so little music in the movie.

Güneş Sayın look cools as the bereaving university student but I can'tsay the same thing for her as the lively,enchanting young girl whocomes out of her depressed shell. İlker Aksum is like not the same guyEnder, from whose point of view you read the whole story in thebook,nevertheless, Aksum is good enough to play the role cut out forhimself in the script. Faith Al is also not bad when you think aboutthe fact you only get to know about him through Çetin in the book.Allin all, if you haven't read the book,the movie may just look'incomplete' for you. If you have read the book and happened to loveit, then it's no doubt that the movie will not satisfy you at all.Let's just hope that the promising Teoman will come up with a betteridea next time because whenever cineastes run out of new ideas, theyjust remember the holy matrimony of silver screen and literature.

Dünya'ya gelmiş geçmiş ve geçerken de çok insana kan kusturmuş diktatörler hakkında pek çok kitap yazılmıştır mutlaka. Lakin bu kitapların çoğu söz konusu olan kişiye kör bir nefretle yazıldığı için okur üzerinde belki de çok kalıcı bir etki bırakmayacaktır. Yaban Kuğuları öyle bir kitap mesela. Chang Mao'yu öylesine bir nefretle anlatır ki kendi kendinize acaba anlattıklarından ne kadarı kurmaca diye sorarsınız kendinize. Bu kitap öyle değil işte. Ribakov Sibirya'da geçirdiği sürgün yıllarından yola çıkarak güçlendikçe daha paranoyak olan Stalin rejiminin yıktığı hayatları anlatıyor. Eleştirisi kör bir komünizm eleştirisi değil. Keskin sözcüklerle Stalin'i yerden yere de vurmuyor ama ne demek istediği tam olarak ne yaşadığını, nerelerde hatalar yapıldığını müthiş bir şekilde anlatıyor...Stalin ile doğrudan ildili olup da daha çok Stalin'in içsel monologları gibi görünen bölümler biraz daha akıcı olsa kusursuz bir kitap olacakmış. Kitabın Türkçe çevirisinin şu an yeni bir kopyasının olmaması ne kadar acı. Asssis'in Mezarımdan Yazıyorum'unu sahaf sahaf gezip bulan ve "arkadaş nasıl bir ülkede yaşıyorum ki stok dışı olan bir kitap 2 yıldır yeni bir baskı görmüyor?" diyen ben bu kitabın da yalnızca sahaflarda olduğunu görünce bir hayli hayıflandım doğrusu. Kitabı İngiltere'den bir arkadaş yolladığı için kendimi şanslı hissediyorum doğrusu. Arayıp da bulamayanlara gittigidiyor ve nadirkitap sayfalarında sahaf dükkanlarında kitabı bulabileceklerini söylemek isterim. Üçlemenin diğer iki kitabını da herhalde yine İngilizce edinmeye çalışacağım ben.

Laylat al-Qadr
Sometimes referred to as "the night of decree or measures", Laylat al-Qadr is considered the most holy night of the year. Muslims believe that Laylat al-Qadr is the night in which the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Also, it is believed to have occurred on an odd-numbered night during the last 10 days of Ramadan, either the night of the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th.

The award-winning Ortalama 40 çöp (Avearage 40 matches) is the story of a package of matches. This package of matches come to life and come out of the box they are entrapped in. All they want is to satisfy their desire to smoke a cigarette. They must somehow feel that their satisfaction will also be their end but they just don't give up. By pushing each other, the get closer to a cigarette which is placed on an ashtray. Two of them try to catch fire by pushing their nose to each other. When they can't succeed, they realize one of them lagged behind. They go back and use the one straggling one to catch fire and then they smoke the cigarette until they themselves are just burned up too.If you like philosophical, though-provoking existential stuff you should consider watching this.The length is shorter than 3 minutes. Give it a try.
